Chapter 15

Lizzy gripped the steering wheel tightly, her knuckles tense and white, as if she were trying to wring answers from the unyielding plastic. Daphne sat beside her, arms crossed tightly over her chest, frowning so hard she could feel her skin wrinkle. The frustration from their encounter with Margot hung thick in the air like smoke, suffocating them with its acrid stench.

“Can you believe her?” Lizzy hissed, breaking the silence that had engulfed them. Her voice was sharp, like broken glass, cutting straight through the tension. “There’s something off about her. I’m sure she’s hiding something.”

Daphne nodded in agreement, recalling the venom that had dripped from Margot’s words when she had badmouthed Muriel just hours before her murder. “I agree,” she murmured, her gaze fixed on the winding road ahead. “She seemed so... cruel when talking about Muriel. It’s unsettling.”

As Lizzy maneuvered the car around a tight bend, Daphne glanced at the rearview mirror to find Dolly sitting quietly on the backseat.

“I don’t trust her,” Daphne continued. She could almost sense Dolly’s agreement in the silent space between them, the bond between witch and familiar never stronger than during moments like these when they could share their thoughts without words. “But we still don’t know enough about what happened to Muriel.”

“Exactly,” Lizzy replied, her brow furrowed in concern. “We need more information if we’re going to figure this out.”

Lizzy’s foot pressed harder on the gas pedal, and Daphne reflexively checked her seatbelt as Dolly meowed a complaint. Lizzy drove safely, but too far above the speed limit for Daphne’s liking. Today, though, she didn’t mind the speed. Her mind was racing twice as fast, whirling with possibilities and unknowns.

With each passing mile, Daphne’s urgency intensified, driven by the unanswered questions surrounding Muriel’s murder. The truth danced just out of reach like a will-o’-the-wisp in the fog, taunting them with its elusive nature. What am I missing?

Motive. As far as motives went, Margot’s was strong. It had felt strong in her vision — Daphne could still feel the lump in Margot’s throat, the sensation that her heart was being physically torn in two.

And then the sheer rage…

“Family is everything,” Daphne murmured over the hum of the engine. It was a mantra she’d heard countless times from Matthew, who had stepped up to care for his daughter after his ex-girlfriend’s tragic death. It was a lesson Daphne had taken to heart. “Being driven out of the family must have hurt Margot badly.”

“More than anything,” Lizzy agreed softly, her hand reaching over to squeeze Daphne’s in a gesture of solidarity. “And sometimes more than blood family. We’ll find the truth, Daph.”

The winding road ahead seemed to mirror the twisted path they’d embarked upon, with each turn revealing new secrets and hidden dangers.

“Hey,” Lizzy broke the silence, her voice measured and focused. “What do you think about going back to the Spencer estate? We didn’t have much time to look around before, and I’ve got this nagging feeling that there’s something we missed in the basement.
